Spectrum Mapping's hyperspectral services offer on-demand, high-resolution spectral
data for environmental decisions demanding insight and accuracy.
TECHNOLOGY
For high spatial and spectral resolution requirements, Spectrum operates the Airborne
Imaging Spectroradiometer for Applications (AISA) sensor system. By relying on the system's
precise spectral resolutions, Spectrum's clients get more information out of each pixel of
data - more detail, finer imagery and faster turnaround than from other hyperspectral systems or
traditional methods of mapping.
Our hyperspectral advantage has been accomplished with a design that integrates:
- AISA hyperspectral imaging sensor to measure up to 55 channels of spectral information
- an airborne DGPS (Differential Global Positioning System - to measure aircraft position); and
- an INS (Integrated Navigation System - to combine the DGPS and an IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) - to measure aircraft attitude

APPLICATIONS
Wetlands
Remote and environmentally sensitive sites can be quickly and accurately mapped, measured and characterized.
Alpha surveys can be quickly performed and classified to put vegetation maps into the hands of
on-site field biologists for further ground investigation. This classification process allows the
scientist to spend time on the areas of interest rather than finding them.
Coral Reef Mapping
No ground control requirement for mapping and characterization of reefs! The airborne
hyperspectral technology provides accurate base maps of the reef communities, and allows for
change detection in near real time. Spectrum's hyperspectral system allows long term ecological
studies at a minimal cost.
Submerged Aquatic Vegetation
SAV's are difficult to quantify unless you can accurately detect, map and measure
vegetation cover areas. Spectrum's hyperspectral sensor allows high-density spatial and
spectral surveys at the time and place you request. Spectrum Products include base maps for
change detection and rapid turn around of images for faster field validation.
Noxious and Introduced Plant Species
Detection and mapping of Phragmites, Purple Lustrife, and numerous wetlands, swamp and
prairie weeds are possible with Spectrum’s airborne hyperspectral sensor. Spectrum's system
measures the effectiveness of eradication and control treatments. It also guides eradication
efforts to specific locations and avoids the economic and an environmental cost of oversprays.
Oil Spills
When oil spills in an area effected by wind, waves, and tides, a rapid and accurate
assessment of the damage can help to maximize the cleanup efforts. Environmentally sensitive
areas can be targeted for protection and cleanup, and the long-term damage can be minimized.
Time sequence images of the oil can guide efforts in real-time by providing relative
concentrations and accurate locations.
Forestry
High spectral and spatial resolution provides the ability to classify tree stands within a forest.
Precise classification of species by stand is possible. Long term forestry management and record
keeping is simplified when the mapped imagery is used in a GIS program. Stress detection and
forest inventory are two of the common products of the AISA hyperspectral imagery.
Water Quality
The ability to collect and analyze very narrow bands of light allows Spectrum to
separate water from aquatic vegetation, point source pollution, and turbidity. Real
time analysis of the images allows field checks in the rapidly changing water conditions
due to wind, current and tides.
