Spectrum Mapping, LLC selected for 2004 Army Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II Quality Award - 08/24/04

Spectrum Mapping, LLC is pleased to announce its selection for a 2004 Army Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Phase II Quality Award, titled “Abstraction and Removal of Feature Data to Generate Bare Earth Models from Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) Technologies”.

The Quality Awards Program, that recognizes SBIR small businesses and SBIR Program Administrators, selected only eight winners, from an initial 4,000 proposals submitted for Phase I. This award for exceptional performance exemplifies the SBIR Program goal of bringing innovative technologies and products to the marketplace. These eight selected projects represent the best in technology innovation, relevance to the needs of the Army, and commercialization potential.

The Army’s ability to manage and process high-resolution Light Detection and Ranging (LIDAR) data is vital to full exploitation. Spectrum applied several innovative approaches that are supported by its LIDAR Mapping and Analysis System (LID-MAS) software. LID-MAS provides a method to efficiently mange and map terrain in 3-D using LIDAR data and allows soldiers to easily import, display, and process various formats within a production environment. LIDAR reflectance features, such as bare earth, buildings, vegetation canopies and roads, can be extracted and exported for use in various terrain mapping tasks. These include Homeland Security urban-based datasets, mapping products for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and military applications such as MOUT, mobility, line of sight/visibility analyses and 3-D visualization.

Under the SBIR program, Spectrum evaluated several aspects of LIDAR data processing that relate directly to automatic feature extraction, classification and LIDAR filtering techniques. The development of data integration tools within an image processing and GIS environment provides the capability to digitally extract 3-D earth surface feature information from LIDAR data over varying terrains and processed within an automated environment. Filtering algorithms were delivered to Z/I Imaging and Intergraph for a planned commercial release in late 2004.
